Research
The fascinating and surprising phenomenon of the benefits
of sensory stimulation for the whole personality have been
described in detail by a number of medical specialists since
the turn of the last centry.
Neuro-scientists have discovered in the last 10 to 20 years
that sensory stimulation leads to a release of hormones responsible
for memory, learning, emotions, energy, alertness and attention.
An example that everyone is familiar with by now, is that
physical exercise leads to the release of endorphins. These
are the hormones that lift our mood and make us feel happy.
The vision, hearing, balance and movement exercises in NP
have exactly this effect.
William Bates, an opthalmologist and physician by profession,
researched vision and the treatment of vision problems at
the turn of the last century and he published his famous book,
Better eyesight without glasses in 1910. This book is still
in print today and it is account by Bates about his discoveries
regarding the effect of vision training exercises on the personality
and on nervous system balance.
vision training exercises are very good for people
Basically he found that his vision training exercises were
very good for people, not only for their vision but for their
mood, their memory, their thinking skills, productivity, organisation
and especially for their satisfaction in life. He found that
when we are stressed we dont see well, and when we are relaxed
we see a whole lot better. He found that if we do a whole
lot of vision training exercises we become more relaxed.
Clearly there is a direct link and feedback loop between
the nervous system and our information highway, the senses.
Bates is not the only health professional to have made these
discoveries.
Subsequent to William Bates, several medical specialists
have researched sensory stimulation as a form of therapy.
Each one of them has confirmed Bates’ observations about
the effects of sensory stimulation on the personality. Sensory
stimulation of our sense of balance, movement, hearing and
touch has exactly the same impact on the personality as vision
training. The effect is always stabilising and stress is always
released.
Sensory stimulation therapies are usually
used to improve sensory perception
Sound therapy, developed initially by Tomatis, improves the
actual perception of what is heard, the memory for what was
heard and the comprehension of what is heard. It is mainly used
to treat auditory processing disorder, a condition where you
can hear, but you cannot process the information in a sensible
and usable way. Vision training improves the ability to process
and use visual information and movement therapies are used to
improve coordination, planning of movement and the sense of
orientation in space.
In practice thes therapies are used by occupational therapists,
physiothrapists, optometrists, language therapists and psychologists.
Usually these are included in the developmental therapies
for children with learning problems. When children have problems
with learning, a high order personality function, the cause
is a problem with organising perception.
The ground work for these therapies was done by pioneers
in the field of sensory training Tomatis has written numerous
books on the effects of sound therapy, Jean Ayers wrote a
book for parents about sensory integration for balance and
movement and of course Bates wrote about vision therapy. Each
of these specialists point out the numerous benefits of sensory
therapies for the whole personality. NP is based on these
methods.
